There’s a particular kind of host whose calm instantly makes everyone else exhale, and Alexandra Tarleton Mirante is exactly that. As the founder of Tarleton Events, Alexandra produces highly private, destination luxury corporate, social, and philanthropic experiences around the globe, all rooted in refined hospitality.

But what makes Alexandra’s approach especially refreshing is how grounded it is: she focuses on what truly matters, skips what doesn’t, and builds gatherings around connection rather than performance. Whether it’s a relaxed dinner with friends or a celebratory pomp-and-circumstance moment, Alexandra’s hosting style proves that the most memorable parties are the ones that feel easy.

Hosting Q&A with Alexandra

Q: When planning a gathering in your home, where do you start?

A: I let the occasion for the gathering guide my decisions. If it’s just a casual get-together, then it calls for a relaxed, no-fuss vibe and a laid-back menu. But if it’s time for celebration and there’s a bit more pomp and circumstance involved, that will directly influence every other choice, from décor and tabletop to developing the menu (and whether I need to call in reinforcements to my kitchen), to getting the word out to guests so they know what to wear.

Q: What are your favorite ways to break the ice or entertain guests?

A: If I have a guest coming who doesn’t know anyone else attending, I connect them with someone who has a common interest (“Sarah loves to ski too!”) so there’s an easy and natural talking point. I also know who likes to stay busy or help, so sometimes I’ll task a few guests with a special mission that gives them a chance to connect (“Can you guys go out and grab us more firewood?”). You’re not forcing anything—just giving a little nudge to say the water’s warm, come on in.

Q: If you had a limited budget for a small dinner party, what would you focus on for the tablescape?

A: People often overlook what they already own. Put your beautiful pitcher to use with some flowers, dig into your crisper drawer and use fresh fruit or vegetables (bonus points if you write guest names on them for a place setting), round up the smaller plants around your home, create little stacks of books (a great conversation starter), and when in doubt, a few taper or votive candles will always set the scene.

Q: What makes a great gathering memorable?

A: When the host leads with an easy-going vibe, it signals to guests to relax, connect with each other, and enjoy one another’s company. That’s when the memories are made.

Q: What tips would you give someone who feels overwhelmed by hosting at home?

A: As long as people have a drink in their hand and something in their stomach, everything else is a bonus.

Q: What’s your favorite party trick?

A: I take out my serving dishes ahead of time and place Post-it notes in each one with what will go on them. It’s a helpful double-check for me. If I see an empty platter, I know I forgot to take something out of the fridge!

Q: What is the most memorable party or gathering you've attended or hosted? Why?

A: My family's annual Derby Day is such a big group effort. There's something so special about enjoying an occasion where each person has lent a hand: someone to set up the croquet, another to run the betting, someone to bake the pies, another to organize the Julep station (and pick all the mint) and teach guests how to make one, someone to make the tea sandwiches, and someone to build the firepit for after the race. It's the perfect example of connection.

Q: What are your favorite products or brands to use when hosting?

A: Crate & Barrel has the best variety of serving dishes and bowls in crisp white, so it complements any specialty dinnerware or china I want to use.

Partytrick Take: Real Hosting Takeaways

Alexandra’s hosting philosophy is a masterclass in making the right decisions, not the most decisions. It’s equal parts luxury and practicality: lead with occasion, focus on comfort, and build simple structures that help guests connect naturally.

How can I recreate this hosting style in a simple way?

Choose one guiding word for the night (casual, celebratory, cozy, festive) and let it steer your choices. Then keep the experience grounded: candlelight, a few already-owned details, and a menu that lets you stay present.

What is the most important planning decision behind this gathering?

Deciding what the occasion calls for. That single decision shapes everything:

  • what you serve (and how much you cook yourself)
  • how you set the table
  • what you communicate to guests
  • how the night feels from the first hello

What can hosts borrow from this approach for their own event?

  • Lead with ease: your energy is the biggest design element in the room.
  • Introduce people with purpose: shared interests beat awkward small talk.
  • Build a mission moment: a tiny task can create an instant connection.
  • Use what you own first: pitchers, produce, plants, books, and candles go far.
  • Keep the essentials simple: food + drink + warmth = success.
