Hosting Q&A with Sheila Tran
Q: When planning a gathering at home, where do you start?
A: I usually start with the theme, although sometimes the occasion comes first. I love building a gathering around a theme so much that, honestly, I’ve been known to come up with the occasion just because I had a theme I couldn’t resist.
Q: What’s your favorite way to break the ice?
A: An easy DIY or simple game is my go-to. I love having something casual and interactive that encourages mingling and gives everyone something fun to do without feeling overly planned or structured.
Q: What would you focus on for a tablescape with a limited budget?
A: I’d focus on the centerpiece. It’s one of the easiest ways to set the tone and bring the theme to life, and you don’t need to spend a lot to make a beautiful, thoughtful statement.

Q: What makes a gathering memorable?
A: The people, the atmosphere, the conversations, and, of course, the food. It’s those little details combined with the people you’re sharing it all with that make a gathering memorable.
Q: What advice would you give someone who feels overwhelmed by hosting?
A: Keep it simple. You don’t have to do everything yourself or make every detail perfect. Choose a few things that matter most and let the rest go. The host's energy sets the tone, so once guests arrive, relax, be present, and enjoy yourself.
Q: What’s your signature food or drink when hosting?
A: My go-to is margaritas. Almost everyone loves them, and they’re easy to customize to fit the theme. I also like to prep a charcuterie board ahead of time so there’s something ready for guests to snack on.

Q: What’s your favorite party trick?
A: I love using curtains as tablecloths for a beautiful, long, drapey look and wrapping paper as a table runner for an easy way to add color or carry through a theme. I also use unexpected vessels—think large vases or planters—as drink coolers filled with ice. They’re simple tricks that make a big impact.
Q: What do you love about Partytrick?
A: I love that Partytrick takes the guesswork out of hosting. The playbooks are probably my favorite feature because they give you a starting point, but you can still make everything your own.

Q: Which gatherings have been the most memorable for you?
A: My kids’ birthday parties are always some of the most memorable. With four boys, I’ve explored so many themes, but a few favorites have been a first-birthday teddy bear picnic and a winter lumberjack party. I’ve also loved hosting Christmas slumber parties and Halloween craft nights.
Q: What are your favorite hosting products?
A: A few favorites from my Amazon storefront are a gold charcuterie tray, chafing dishes, the Ninja SLUSHi, and a drink tower.

Partytrick Take: Real Hosting Takeaways
Sheila’s gatherings show how a clear idea and a few thoughtful choices can create an experience that feels much more elaborate than it is. From wrapping-paper runners to margaritas tailored to the theme, every element supports the atmosphere while keeping the host’s workload realistic.
How can I recreate this hosting style in a simple way?
Choose one theme-defining element and repeat it two or three times. Start with a centerpiece, then echo its color or mood in a paper runner, a drink garnish, or a simple activity. You’ll create cohesion without sourcing an entirely new tablescape.
What is the most important planning decision behind this gathering?
Decide where to concentrate your effort. Sheila prioritizes the guest experience: something inviting to see, something ready to eat or drink, and something easy to do. That decision improves the flow from the moment guests arrive and keeps the host out of last-minute preparation mode.
What can hosts borrow from this approach for their own event?
- Turn a theme you love into a reason to gather—no milestone required.
- Spend your tablescape budget on one strong centerpiece.
- Repurpose household materials, such as curtains, wrapping paper, vases, or planters.
- Prepare a snack and signature drink ahead of time so you can welcome guests calmly.
- Add one low-pressure activity that helps conversation begin naturally.
