Host How I Host: Angelica Laws

Angelica Laws, founder and creative director of Angelica & Co. Events and Styling, has built her career around crafting elevated, deeply personalized weddings rooted in intentional design and genuine client connection. Her work blends refined aesthetics with an approachable, high-touch planning experience, creating celebrations that feel both luxurious and deeply human.
At home, her philosophy translates seamlessly. Angelica approaches entertaining the same way she designs weddings: atmosphere first, details that matter, and an unwavering focus on how guests feel. From her signature seasonal charcuterie spreads to nostalgic 90s R&B playlists, her gatherings are layered, warm, and quietly impactful. Here, she shares how to host beautifully without overcomplicating it, and why the illusion of effortlessness might just be the ultimate party trick.
Q: When planning a gathering in your home, where do you start?
A: I always start with the overall mood and aesthetic direction, because once the visual tone and feeling of the gathering are defined, every other decision from the menu to the decor details naturally falls into place in a way that feels cohesive, intentional, and reflective of the experience I want guests to have.

Q: What are your favorite ways to break the ice or entertain guests?
A: I love anything that creates an easy, natural point of connection without feeling forced. Beautifully styled food stations or a signature cocktail moment always work wonders because they give guests something to gather around and comment on. I’m also a fan of subtle interactive elements, a thoughtfully curated playlist that shifts the energy of the room, a visually interesting conversation piece, or even something playful like a shared tasting or mini experience, all of which encourage people to engage, relax, and feel like they’re part of something memorable rather than just attending.
Q: If you had a limited budget for a small dinner party, what would you focus on for the tablescape?
A: Let the food do the talking. Even on a limited budget, presentation earns double the impact. Thoughtful styling, how dishes are plated, layered, and arranged, can instantly make even the simplest menu feel elevated and intentional. Never skip the garnishes. When the food is visually considered, the entire tablescape feels more luxurious, proving that how you style something is often far more powerful than how much you spend.
Q: What makes a great gathering memorable?
A: What truly makes a gathering memorable is the people in the room. Beautiful details and thoughtful touches certainly set the stage, but it’s the energy, connection, and shared moments among guests that define the experience. When the atmosphere encourages conversation, laughter, and genuine interaction, the gathering naturally becomes something guests remember long after the evening ends.

Q: What tips would you give someone feeling overwhelmed by hosting?
A: Feeling overwhelmed by hosting is incredibly common, and the key is giving yourself permission to simplify. Guests are there to spend time with you, not to evaluate perfection. Focus on creating a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere rather than an elaborate production. Choose a few elements that feel manageable, a relaxed menu, simple styling, an easy flow for the evening, and let the rest go. When you’re at ease, your guests will be too, and that energy matters far more than any detail.
Q: Share your signature recipe.
A: My signature hosting staple is a countertop charcuterie spread that guests can immediately dive into. I love making it feel a bit funky and seasonal, layering in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and a rotating mix of meats, cheeses, honeys, and jams so it feels different every time. It’s become a true house signature that our gatherings are known for, and the best part is how effortlessly it can come together, often just 30 minutes before guests arrive. It's even been an easy group effort with friends who come early for a drink before the main fun begins.
Q: What’s your go-to dinner party soundtrack?
A: I happily let my wife take the lead on music, but our dinner parties usually have an eclectic mix, queer artists, top hits, and plenty of throwback 90s and early 2000s R&B that we absolutely love. The vibe always lands somewhere between nostalgic, feel-good, and subtly dance-worthy.

Q: What’s your favorite party trick?
A: My favorite party trick is creating the illusion of effortlessness. I focus on a few high-impact elements, like getting the lighting just right, paired with easy, convenient touches for guests like disposable hand towels in the bathroom. Candles instantly add warmth to any room, and small details like matchbooks in the restrooms go a surprisingly long way. Guests rarely notice complexity. They simply feel the atmosphere you’ve created.
Q: What do you love about Partytrick?
A: What I love about Partytrick is how effortlessly it blends inspiration with practicality. It’s not just visually appealing, it’s genuinely useful, offering clever, realistic ideas that feel both elevated and achievable. My favorite feature is the way it sparks creativity while still respecting real-life hosting, making entertaining feel exciting rather than overwhelming.
Q: Most memorable party?
A: The most memorable gatherings for me have been a series of Supper Clubs, where the moments almost blur together. When everyone feels completely comfortable in the room, the individual dates stop mattering. It becomes less about a single evening and more about a collection of shared experiences. Those gatherings stay with you because of the atmosphere, the ease, and the genuine connection that carries through every moment.

Q: What are your favorite products or brands to use when hosting?
A: I gravitate toward pieces that make hosting feel elevated yet effortless. Disposable hand towels are always a staple, along with small containers and vessels that help style charcuterie boards in a layered, visually interesting way. I’m drawn to anything that adds warmth and personality without feeling overly formal. For me, it’s always about items that create atmosphere while still being practical and approachable for real-life entertaining.
